If you’re new to quilting, welcome — you’re in for something beautiful. Here are a few things that’ll make your first project smoother (and way more fun).
1. Start Small
Try a simple throw or baby quilt first. It’ll help you learn the basics without feeling overwhelmed.
2. Invest in Good Tools
A sharp rotary cutter, a cutting mat, and a clear quilting ruler will make all the difference. Trust me, dull blades cause more frustration than you’d think.
3. Prewash (Most) Fabrics
It’s not mandatory, but washing your fabric first prevents surprises later — especially if it shrinks or bleeds color.
4. Press Everything
Press your seams open or to one side after each step. It’s the secret to a flat, professional-looking quilt top.
5. Label Your Pieces
When working with many cuts, use sticky notes or painter’s tape to label each piece. Future-you will thank you.
6. Test Your Stitch Length
A short stitch (around 2.0 mm) works best for piecing — it holds strong and looks neat.
7. Be Patient with Yourself
Your first quilt might not be perfect — and that’s okay. Every stitch is part of your story. You’ll get better with every project, and one day, you’ll look back and smile at how far you’ve come.
